We produce both verbal and written engineering reports for various purposes such as engineering studies, machinery design audits and legal investigations for either defense or plaintiff. This exemplar report illustrates our formal written report format and one type of content.

Some of the background of this particular report follows.

Reports are set in the context of a specific situation and varying theories. We produced this report for an automobile / truck collision death case that went to trial. We and other witnesses testified and the jury ruled favorably for our client. Proper names and other identifying particulars have been removed to preserve the privacy of the persons and companies involved.

We were brought into this case late. Police investigations had been completed, depositions had been taken and other engineering firms had investigated the accident and made or attempted to make computer reconstructions of the accident. The testimony of the only eye witness to come forward was being heavily attacked. Another issue was whether or not the truck driver had made a legal turn across a painted median in the roadway.

The damage to the striking automobile was extensive. The adverse party had presented a computer reconstruction and offered an opinion as to a very low vehicle speed for their client. Other engineering firms' computer reconstructions of the accident were questionable. The police accident reconstructionist had declined to make a computer reconstruction due to the extensive damage to the automobile.

After examining the evidence, we too declined to make a computer reconstruction. Computer reconstructions lose accuracy as vehicle damage becomes more extensive. Our presentation of our investigation focused rather on what accident scenarios were reasonable and believable, with vehicle dynamics examined for each of the different scenarios.

This exemplar engineering expert report illustrates these methods.
